Mindfulness

What is Mindfulness and how's it applicable in counseling?

My own definition of mindfulness is a non-judgmental awareness regarding thoughts, feelings and behaviors and how they impact, both negatively and positively, our life and relationships. 

Using mindfulness techniques is helpful in a variety of ways. Benefits of mindfulness include 

  • Reduced worry
  • Stress reduction
  • Focus
  • Less emotional reactivity
  • More cognitive flexibility
  • Relationship satisfaction

When we become more mindful, we create more awareness regarding how much control we have over the suffering in our lives. This is not to say that our suffering goes away, rather, we begin to realize we have choices as to how we react to our suffering. Becoming mindful means feeling empowered to make better choices that can help create a more meaningful and fulfilled life.
